About

The Institute for Functional Medicine (IFM) is a global leader in advancing the principles and practice of functional medicine. Through its website, IFM connects practitioners and patients, provides educational programs and certifies practitioners in functional medicine. As both an educational organization and a voice for the movement, IFM’s mission is to expand the reach and accessibility of functional medicine.

Problem Overview

As a hub for practitioners and patients, IFM’s website serves as a central point of connection to the greater functional medicine ecosystem. However, their previous website was no longer equipped to support the organization’s scale, evolving content needs or growing audience. With new educational offerings, a global practitioner directory, and increased emphasis on data integration and user experience, IFM needed a more structured, scalable and flexible platform to support its next chapter.

A Platform for Growth and Connection

SiteCrafting began the project with a full audit of the existing website, followed by close collaboration with the IFM team to document detailed functional and technical requirements. The rebuild focused on creating a unified digital experience by connecting users to learning pathways, practitioner resources, and health content, while also establishing a more structured foundation to support IFM’s continued growth.

Built on a customized Drupal Commerce platform, the new website supports a robust set of user experiences, including purchasing educational products, accessing course content through IFM’s learning management system, and exploring functional medicine through articles, podcasts, and practitioner resources.

To support these experiences, SiteCrafting developed custom modules including:

  • Single Sign-On (SSO) integration for seamless transitions between the website and learning management system
  • Custom middleware to sync user data between the website and IFM’s customer relationship management and learning management systems
  • A rebuilt “Find a Practitioner” tool, featuring location-aware search authenticated by Google and filters for virtual or in-person care
  • A centralized account dashboard where users can view certification pathways, purchases, and progress, pulling in real-time data from the customer relationship management system

These improvements dramatically reduced friction for both users and IFM staff. Prior to the rebuild, data was scattered across systems. The new integration creates a single source of truth for user data, eliminating duplicate accounts and improving site security with two-factor authentication.

Purpose-Built for Practitioners and Patients

The redesigned site reflects IFM’s commitment to practitioner development and public awareness. New areas of the site, such as “Health Topics” and “Partnerships,” allow the organization to reach broader audiences and highlight relationships with like-minded organizations. The shared taxonomy system enables content (e.g., articles, podcasts, conference sessions) to surface across the site based on interest, making the experience more dynamic and informative.

Additional enhancements include:

  • Podcast module for showcasing ongoing learning opportunities
  • User-specific pricing based on their chosen product options
  • Taxonomy-driven content display to show related materials across site sections
  • Custom scheduling tools for events and conferences

Global readiness, with support for international users and virtual practitioner listing.

A Platform with Power Behind the Scenes

Behind the scenes, the Drupal architecture was built to scale to make it capable of managing IFM’s growing product catalog and evolving content library. With a structured taxonomy, better performance in search, and hosting that includes disaster recovery failovers, the new site provides flexibility and stability.

SiteCrafting also trained the IFM development team in Drupal best practices, ensuring ongoing success and autonomy for future site updates.

A Digital Experience That Reflects a Movement

IFM’s new website is more than a rebuild, it’s a reimagined digital experience that better serves its audience while strengthening the organization’s infrastructure. With deep integration between systems, an improved content strategy and a platform ready for global scale, IFM is equipped to bring functional medicine to more people, more effectively than ever before.

By creating a site that’s interconnected, data-driven and accessible, SiteCrafting helped IFM advance its mission to make functional medicine an integral part of health care worldwide.
