He’s a rapper, style icon, and super smart content creator. I’ve been following Lil Nas X on Instagram and Twitter for a while and have been taking notes, especially after his recent album release.
Even if your business isn’t as fun or sexy as Lil Nas X, there are definitely lessons we can learn about how to step up your social media game.
Social needs to be a part of your marketing strategy
Take note, if you don’t consider social media as part of your overall marketing strategy at this point you are missing out. While we aren’t advocating on leaning entirely on social media (learn our reasons why in this blog post), social media is a powerful tool to engage with your audience.
Lil Nas X uses his social to engage with fans (as well as haters), provide behind-the-scenes content and promote his work and achievements.
Have a vision for your campaign
Lil Nas X’s last album release focused on the birth of his album — literally. And he stuck to his vision with posts about getting married, announcing his pregnancy (complete with a Maury skit), and then getting wheeled into a hospital room to give birth.
As far as generating buzz for his album, this was a genius way to create a ton of content.
Lean into your weird
Lil Nas X has been pushing the envelope since he hit the scene with his genre-bending hit Old Town Road. He leans into what makes him different from other artists and that’s exactly what makes us pay attention. I, for one, have been following for his head-turning fashion choices (hello, Met Gala outfit) but also loved his Voldemort post when he released Call Me By My Name.

Other artists that we love for pushing the envelope? Madonna, Prince and Lady Gaga (to name a few).
Waiting for what’s next
At the time of writing the first draft of this post, Lil Nas X, who is notoriously active on Instagram and Twitter, deleted all his Instagram posts. It caused some fans to worry about the artist but I believed him to be far too intentional to delete without a plan. His social media accounts are currently active and up to date, filled with award show appearances, celebrity selfies and inspiration to guide us all.
