What is Gutenberg?
As you may have heard, WordPress 5.0 was finished and released at the end of 2018. In addition to several “under the hood” improvements, this core WordPress update features a new block-style editor called “Gutenberg”.
WordPress first announced introducing a block-style editor in June 2017. The new Gutenberg editor changes the way users can edit content.
Our team has been tracking the Gutenberg editor process since the beginning. We dedicated a small task force to focus on how this new editor impacts our development process and to test it. We’ve found that this new editing style can benefit new websites that aren’t built upon managed page fields.
But for the majority of our website redesign projects, the custom-fields and templates that we currently build for our clients is still the best experience.
What does this mean for your website?
Luckily, WordPress offers an easy way to update to version 5.0 while maintaining the classic editing experience via a plugin. Using this, we can ensure that your website will continue to run the best, and most secure version of WordPress, while also providing the same page editing experience.
As of February 2019, WordPress 5.0 has reached a stable point with patch version 5.0.3. We have already begun the process of applying it to our client’s websites. Upgrades began in February and will continue through March.
Your website may have been upgraded already or will be soon. Our process is to upgrade websites in small batches to ensure that each one receives the focus and attention required to guarantee a smooth transition.
What do you need to do?
Nothing. As a part of our managed hosting plans, SiteCrafting takes care of all WordPress core and plugin updates. There is no action required from you.
