Have you ever met someone and wondered where they had been your whole life?
Gretchen Caserotti is one of those people for me.
We first met when we were in the American Leadership Forum Fellowship program (Class XXXI, IKYK!) and I noticed Gretchen’s grounded presence and approachability right away. When I learned about her background in theater and waiting tables, it all made so much sense. Suddenly, her ability to understand the nuance of details in a story and the explanation for why she can absolutely crush a karaoke stage, came into full view.
The Art of “Hospitality-First” Leadership
Gretchen understands people. As the Executive Director of the Pierce County Library System, she is in a position of service to our community and keeps an open mind about how to evolve libraries into the future.
If you think about it, modern libraries aren’t just about rows of quiet bookshelves; they are community living rooms, digital lifelines and safe spaces for discovery. Leading an institution like that requires a rare mix of administrative grit and deep, soul-level empathy, which are traits Gretchen has in spades.
Her unique background is actually her superpower:
- The Theater Background: It shows up in how she designs “the stage” for our community. She knows how to create welcoming environments where everyone, from a toddler at storytime to a teenager discovering digital design, feels like they have a front-row seat.
- The Service Industry Background: Anyone who has ever waited tables knows it’s where you master the art of active listening, anticipating needs before they’re spoken, and moving through a chaotic room with absolute grace. Gretchen brings that exact “hospitality first” mindset to her leadership style.
A great leader doesn’t just manage a system; they champion human connection. Gretchen is doing the thing.
Evolving for the Future
In a world that can sometimes feel increasingly disconnected, Gretchen is busy building bridges. The library system isn’t just adapting to the future; it’s actively welcoming it, ensuring that our community remains connected, curious and supported.
Pierce County is incredibly lucky to have her at the helm, and I’m even luckier to call her a classmate, a fellow karaoke enthusiast and a friend.
